Spring solutions and support from Springs4U
What Is a Compression Spring?
A compression spring is designed to resist a pushing force. When a load presses on the spring, it shortens and stores energy. When that load is removed, the spring pushes back toward its original length. Compression springs are commonly made as open coils, with space between each turn so the spring can compress.
Many compression springs have a consistent diameter, while others are shaped with tapered, curved or other specialised profiles to suit their application. Their ends may be open, closed or ground, depending on how the spring needs to sit and perform in the finished assembly.
Compression springs are used in a wide range of products and equipment, wherever controlled resistance or a return force is needed. The right design depends on factors such as the available space, the force required, the spring’s working length and the conditions in which it will be used.

Materials and Spring Design
Compression springs can be made from different materials, including stainless steel, spring steel and music wire. The most suitable material depends on the spring’s intended use and the conditions it will need to handle. Dimensions, material and end style all contribute to how the spring performs.
At Springs4U, we can help you identify the details needed for your spring enquiry. Sharing measurements, the application and any known load or operating requirements helps us understand what you’re looking for and discuss suitable options with you.
How Compression Springs Are Made
In general, a compression spring is formed by shaping spring wire around a coiling tool or machine to create the required diameter and coil spacing. The wire size and spring dimensions are selected to meet the design requirements. Depending on the specification, the spring may then receive additional processing, such as heat treatment, to help it retain its shape and perform reliably in use.
Each spring design is specific to its application. If you need a compression spring, contact Springs4U with your requirements and our team will help you with your enquiry.
